| Building Houses |
[Sep. 20th, 2006|10:42 am] |
Well, I've found that I don't like to build dollhouses as much as I like to decorate them. My house is still in many pieces...but at least almost every piece is painted. I'm trying to get it all painted by the weekend so I can actually assemble (and take photos) on Sunday. Unfortunately, I'm trying a new medication and it's zapping all my energy in waves - some days are okay but others wipe me out in strings of two or three. I feel better today and hope to get a final coat on all of the walls tonight.
I got Making Doll's House Miniatures with Polymer Clay by Sue Heaser in the mail yesterday so I can finally take back the one I borrowed from the library two months ago. It's a great book with absolutely amazing projects - if you ever see it at the book store, take a quick look - everything is so realistic. Once I get the house together, I'll have my kitchen table back and can sit down for some hours of polymer fun.
Does anyone else have a craft room that they never actually craft in? I love my craft room but would much rather work at the kitchen table or on the living room floor. One reason I think I don't like to work in my craft room is that it's almost always a crazy mess but I really don't have any desire to work in there when it's clean either.... I really need to make myself work there even if it's only to get good use out of the great lamp my boyfriend bought me for my birthday.
And here's my most exciting bit of dollhouse news: my oh so talented friend Adele (who, by the way, has a photo of a dragonfly on her site right now that I absolutely love) agreed to knit/crochet/tat (I left it up to her) a runner for the Shaker pie safe and the trunk I'm using as a coffee table. I'm so excited and can't wait to see what she comes up with! |

| Welcome to the Dollhouse |
[Aug. 30th, 2006|08:19 am] |
So I haven't really been very creative recently. Started a lot of projects but rarely finished any.
But the other day I bought a dollhouse kit. I've picked out the colors - kind of a beach house theme of blues - and painted the outside walls, stained the floors and picked out tile for the kitchen floor. I also bought a bed and wardrobe/dresser and made a new comforter, pillowcases, sheet and whatever that thing is that you cover the mattress with (it totally slipped my mind) because the one it came with was cute but green and white striped and totally wrong for a beach house.
I can't wait to put it together so I can start decorating the inside. I borrowed a great polymer clay book about making things in miniature and can't wait to get back into the clay thing - lots of little miniature food, dishes plants and fun stuff! And hopefully I'll have photos at some point! |

| The Angel Oak |
[Jun. 19th, 2006|01:40 pm] |

The Angel Oak - Charleston, South Carolina
I'm home from my vacation and back at work. I just hope the two week break has cleansed my system and I'll begin to feel crafty again sometime very soon.
The above oak is over 1,400 years old and was utterly amazing. |

| Who Knew! |
[May. 18th, 2006|02:08 pm] |
I found an old Rice Krispies recipe box at the thrift store today and was surpised to find that one can use that delightfully crunchy cereal in more than just a marshmallow treats! For example:
Quick Savory Meatloaf
1 egg 3/4 c. milk 1 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. pepper 1 tsp. dry mustard 1 tbs. Worcestershire sause 1/3 c. finely chopped onion 2 cups Kellog'sĀ® Rice KrispiesĀ® cereal 1 1/2 Lbs. ground beef
In a large mixing bowl, beat egg slightly. Stir in remaining ingredients except ground beef. Let stand about five minutes or until cereal is softened (ugh). Beat well. Add ground beef. Mix until combined. Shape into loaf. Place in greased or foil-lined shallow baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees F, 1 hour or until well browned.
The back of the recipe also points out that you can use the above to make Savory Cheeseburgers by shaping into 8 patties. Eeek.
It seems that you could throw Rice Krispies into just about anything. I'll spare you my other favorite - Meat 'n Tater Pie! |

| Why I Should Stick to Bags and Animals |
[May. 2nd, 2006|11:50 am] |
So I thought it would be a great idea to make a couple of summer dresses and a cute top or two for our vacation next month. I bought a couple of simple patterns and - for the dress - the cutest pink material, dotted with daisies and cherries. I got home all excited and immediately took my measurements. I came out to be a size 18 which I'm okay with but once I cut it out, did some of the sewing and tried it on...I'm so not an 18. More like a 12. So I swim in it! I tried to take it in but the collar just didn't look right so I guess I have some cute material to make a new bag with. And waisted several hours of my weekend. But I think I'm going to go back and get the same print for my next go 'round because it's really cute and looks adorable with a denim short sleeved shirt.
The shirt is a little more complicated so I'm glad I didn't start with that and end up with a swimming pool. Unfortunately, I'm a little bummed about the whole thing and not too eager to start over. And I was really looking forward to having a new dress to wear to my friends' Cinco de Mayo party Friday night! Maybe I'll buck up and start the shirt tonight instead. I just realized that the material for the shirt also has daisies on it.... |

| Recycled Clothing & Stuff |
[Apr. 20th, 2006|11:30 am] |
I can't post pictures yet so I'll post links! :-)
Check out this jellyfish skirt made from a sheet by Pearl of Civilization. It's awesome and she looks so cute in it!
I don't think I'd have the patience to attempt to make one (check out the photo of the back) but I totally want to make this skirt from Whip Up. I've always loved old man pants.
A couple of other cute links:
House Wives Tarot and the totally addictive Stuff on My Cat.
Has anyone ever ordered a t-shirt from Threadless?
I'm thinking about ordering this shirt (although I like Ambition Killed the Cat better but it's already sold out! The Blog t-shirt is cute, too.) but I'm nervous about purchasing t-shirts online because you just never know how they're going to fit. I don't like to wear giant t-shirts anymore but I also don't like my clothing to cling to my skin - so if anyone's ordered one, please let me know how they fit! |

| Kitty |
[Apr. 19th, 2006|10:38 am] |
I actually made something last night! I finally tried out Hilary's Pointy Kitty pattern and it turned out really cute. I used some fabric from my Granny Stash and some pearl buttons that Shannon sent me ages ago (and I just rediscovered her blog - it's amazing how many blogs slipped through the cracks when I changed computers but I'm glad that I'm finally hunting some of them down). She's on the bookshelf, peering down with her odd white eyes (the more I think about it, she's actually kind of creepy - I don't know why I thought pearl eyes wouldn't be a bit spooky).
But no photos. Still can't download pictures, dammit. It's too bad because I also have photos of the blanket I made for Tracey. Argh.
I just put in for my vacation in June! We're going to visit my brother in Charleston so if anyone knows of any good things to do there (I haven't been there since I was in high school or something), let me know! |

| Finished Projects |
[Apr. 3rd, 2006|08:38 am] |
I actually made stuff this past weekend!
First of all, I finished my ATC's for Amy's spring ATC swap. They turned out pretty cute for my first real ATC's but they're now sealed in an envelope in my outbox and I didn't take a picture. I guess I was just excited to actually finish something.
And I almost finished my friend Tracey's baby blanket. My plan was to knit her a blanket but I just can't stick to a project that long so I picked up some light yellow fleece and this adorable giraffe fabric and whipped up a blanket. I still have to finish sewing on the rick rack on one side but it's pretty much finished. I think everyone who has a baby is going to get one of these blankets from me - no pattern, easy to finish...the only time consuming part is the above mentioned rick-rack because I'm hand sewing it on.
Now if I could just finish my craft room! I worked in the living room this weekend because the room isn't finished and I can't want to work in a messy room. (Plus, I was watching the ends of Cinderella Man and Batman Begins because I'd fallen asleep halfway through both of them Saturday night.) Anyway, I bought two more bins this weekend so I should be able to finally find places for the last little bit of stuff that's scattered all over the floor. Hopefully I'll have it functional by the weekend.
I hope you had a crafty weekend, too! ;-)
Edit: HA! I just realized my web address is wrong on my ATCs. I flip flopped the 'livejournal' and 'daintykitty' - sigh, oh well. |

| A Little Late |
[Mar. 21st, 2006|10:04 am] |
I'm a little slow to jump on the monster bandwagon but I picked up Stupid Sock Creatures at the library the other day and was amazed. What a cute book!
Small problem - I can't find a damned thrift store that sells socks! |

| Pain in the Crochet |
[Mar. 20th, 2006|11:09 am] |
So I bought The Happy Hooker yesterday thinking I'd be crocheting by evening.
Yeah, right.
I was able to learn how to knit from the SnB books without too much problem (compared to the dozen other books I tried to learn from, that is) but am completely at a crochet loss after making a basic chain. When I try to go under the Vs, everything gets all knotty and it just doesn't look right.
Does anyone know of any good crochet tutorials that might help me out? |

[Mar. 13th, 2006|04:53 pm] |
Ah, I can't wait to get my craft room finally set up - I'm close but not close enough - I really miss crafting.
Then I think I'll get into some swaps - my new mailbox is mighty empty! |

| I Should be on My Way Home to Pack... |
[Feb. 13th, 2006|05:28 pm] |
...but I'm here late anyway so I might as well do a quick update.
I'm moving back to Dayton - hurray! - I might have already mentioned that but...I have no memory as of late. I took the same position in the Dayton office as I have here in Columbus so I'm trying to train a replacement here and that's not going so well (we have a new temp starting next week) so I have no idea when I'll actually be a Dayton Resident but my move date is the 25th. The best part? I rented a two bedroom apartment to I can actually - finally - have a craft room!
In other news - serious car trouble. So not only am I moving but I'll probably be buying a new car, as well. After dumping $4,500 into to - money that I don't have. Needless to say, my stress levels have been really high.
But, on a happy note, I have a really great boyfriend - I'm looking at a beautiful bouquet of roses and day lilies that he gave me for Valentine's Day.
Gotta take the good with the bad! |

| On a Whim... |
[Jan. 20th, 2006|02:43 pm] |
I dyed my hair black last night. No pictures, though, as it's dreary here in Ohio. After dying it and then feeling rather like I shouldn't have, I knitted up a cute little headband out of the Most Expensive Yarn I've Ever Bought which I've been hoarding since I was in Florida last May. Not wearing the headband today, though...just a little black eyeliner as this hair fires up my inner Joan.
I'm sad because Theresa of Rock-Paper-Scissors gave up blogging today. I'll really miss her but think that I understand...I've pretty much given up my personal journal and only make the occasional post here. I just wish I could get myself to write in my paper journal a little more often.
Off to Dayton for training next week - have a nice weekend! |

| In a Pinch |
[Jan. 19th, 2006|12:11 pm] |
Yesterday my trunk was frozen shut and, unfortunately, my ice scraper was in my trunk. After several failed attempts to scrape the ice away with my gloved fingers, I used the only thing I could find in my car...my new size 13 bamboo knitting needles.
Luckily, those little suckers are sturdy. They helped me get into my trunk, didn't snap and I was only a few minutes late to work! |

| Have Some Ideas But Need Help.... |
[Jan. 5th, 2006|04:29 pm] |
You're making a cute/sweet/naughty Valentine's coupon book for your lovah...what coupons do you include?
And a second question...I made one of these for my last boyfriend and it was kickass...am I wrong to recycle the idea and some of the coupons with my current sweetie? |

| Camera Cozy |
[Dec. 28th, 2005|05:00 pm] |
Simple but Cute.

My cousin Julie inspired me with the news that she made a camera cozy so I started with a cell phone cozy and it turned out cute, too, but no photos as I still have to finish stitching on the Velcro.
I'm not so great with photos but those bright spots are sequins and beads and the green lump is a wristlet based on the handle of the yoga mat bag from Stitch N Bitch Nation 'cause I had to get something out of trying to make that damned bag! I attempted it for my mom but...wow, lace is hard! The handle was the only thing I finished!
Anyway, I'm kind of glad Christmas is over from a craft point of view...I just took on too much, too late. In fact, I bought my first moleskin journal yesterday in hopes that I'll write a bit more and one of the first things I did was make a list of things I'd like to do in 2006 (not resolutions...just things I'd like to do) and one of them was to start my Christmas projects in October. Geesh.
Another non-resolution was to start quilting. I have that great book, a JoAnn's gift card from my granny and a quilting mom who's going to help me purchase my "tools" - I just hope Instant Gratification Girl can hack this quilting thing.
If any of you fabulous quilters out there have any favorite gadgets or tips I'd love to know!
I hope everyone had a great holiday! |

| Is Christmas Here Yet? |
[Dec. 20th, 2005|04:05 pm] |
Argh. Too many Christmas scarves! I'm just about knitted out and I still have one to finish.
I also have a few more crafty presents to finish and little more shopping to do which will have to wait until Friday, payday.
I'm making little card sets (one of the projects I still have to finish,of course) to give to some of my girl friends and was trying to come up with something else to add with it. I think I might clean up the kitchen when I get home and pull out my old soap making supplies. I haven't made soap in years.
It seems like, no matter how early I start, I'm still scrambling to get everything done by Christmas Eve.
I was out sick yesterday and camera-less or I would have taken a picture of my tree (surrounded by boxes of scarves) for Self Portrait Tuesday. Maybe tomorrow.... |

| Dad's Christmas Scarf |
[Nov. 29th, 2005|03:16 pm] |
My dad likes wild colors. He's masculine but...a little wacky.
Still...this might be too much. What do you think? Too femme-y?
